a print of a soft pastel on sanded paper (original: 18.5”x24.5”)
Those of you who grew up in Russia or are familiar with Russian literature will recognize this timeless scene from Alexander Pushkin’s Fairy Tale “Ruslan and Lyudmila.” Full of magic, passion, mystery and adventure, this story captured my imagination from early childhood and now, having read it again as an adult, I feel and understand the author’s youthful passion and genius in a whole new way. I love it even more. In this scene, Ruslan comes upon what he thinks is a mount in the middle of an old battlefield, but is actually a giant sleeping head of a warrior. The head is guarding a magic sword, that beheaded that giant warrior. Leave it to Pushkin to capture our imaginations - read “Ruslan and Lyudmila" for yourself.
